The tailcoat's short front and split tail styling is designed to be worn while on horseback, and the tailcoat came to signify wealth and good breeding, making its way into contemporary fashion.
In the early 19th century, Regency Tailcoats were worn by most gentlemen of substance. These tightly tailored coats with high collars were available in a host of colors beyond black and charcoal including navy, burgundy and green.
The tailcoat grew to take a more conservative role in later years, featured only in black or white for formal events and ditching the high collars for a notched lapel. You can still see this style worn today for weddings, black tie events and galas.
